Near Field Communications (NFC) is the name for a new set of wireless communication standards that will enable devices of all kinds to talk to each other when in close proximity. Formally standardized in 2003, NFC has been waiting for a killer application to hit its tipping point and go mainstream. While most industry insiders knew this killer app would be some form of payment protocol, it is only now that momentum has really built over this capability, as all manner of companies huddle up into partnerships in order to be first to market. Google, Apple, VISA, MasterCard, American Express—suddenly all the big players want a piece of the action as the reality of bringing together the necessary hardware, software and human elements finally appears on the horizon. Now is the time to start planning for how your company may use NFC in the future.
